Call of love from the camp

“I am sending you a message of solidarity. It’s a call of love from the brothers and sisters who are commonly known as Rohingyas, waiting to be embraced with positivity”- said the Archbishop of Dhaka Archdiocese, His Eminence Cardinal Patrick D’ Rozario, CSC in the camp, where more than one million refugees have been living for nearly about one and half years.

On Saturday, 16 February 2019, His Eminence (H. Em.) Cardinal Patrick D’ Rozario, CSC along with the Vatican Ambassador, His Excellency Archbishop George Kochery visited the world’s largest refugee camp at Ukhiya in Cox’s Bazar. He was accompanied by the Executive Director of Caritas Bangladesh Mr. Francis Atul Sarker; the Regional Director of Caritas Chattogram Region Mr. James Gomes; the Regional Coordinator (Asia) of Migrants and Refugees Sector of Vatican City Ms. Naoko Maruyama; the senior fellow of International Institute for Environment and Development Dr. Saleemul Huq and other members of Caritas Cox’s Bazar district office.

It is not unknown to the world that how the Rohingya people fled to Bangladesh and what was their situation at the beginning of the influx. While visiting the camp for the third time, His Eminence Cardinal Patrick D’ Rozario, CSC with a bright smile says “I am happy to see that they are living in a human way and getting daily necessities. I could see their fear and aggressiveness turning into joy and confidence when children come forward to greet us from their well-developed bamboo houses.”

To prevent any second catastrophe for the upcoming monsoon, the Caritas camp area was well developed and turned into a bamboo city. The Team visited Caritas Bangladesh’s distribution center, warehouse, model houses, site improvement activities and one of the ten Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS) run by Caritas Bangladesh.
