Goal Two: Quality Education
Education is very much essential for the socio-economic development of the country, and is an essential component for diminishing poverty as well. The government has a strong commitment to ensure education in the country and move toward the realization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by developing peoples’ life conditions. Present government’s projects to promote education of children in Bangladesh include compulsory primary education for all, free education for girls up to grade 10, stipends for female students, a nationwide integrated education system and food-for-education literacy movement.
Caritas Bangladesh believes that education is the light for sustainable human development which ensures everybody’s equal right. So, Caritas wants to link with Government and highlight its expertise education for all formal, non-formal and vocational education for the poorest of the poor, hardest to reach, children with disabilities and underprivileged children in order to support the government for achieving the SDGs. Caritas has published primer in eight ethnic languages for ensuring primary education of indigenous children in their respective mother tongue. Caritas Bangladesh has a strong commitment to education with its different projects and thus it has set quality education as one of the goals in its five-year plan (2014-2019).
During the reporting period Caritas ran 1,203 schools with 92,065 students (boy-47,446, girl – 44,619). Among them, 36,468 children were from the ethnic and cultural minority communities and 1,400 were disabled. In total 5,166 (boy- 4,367, girl- 799) youngsters received vocational and technical education on different trades. In total 509 teachers and 685 youths received training on morality and value education. A total of 1,250 students from different ethnic communities received stipend to study in the secondary and tertiary schools. Besides, a number of cross cutting issues were addressed as morality, spirituality and value education in all projects. The ultimate goal is to mainstream the out of school children and support them to continue education.
